If you're leaving the calf on like we do draining the udder early in production isn't a good idea. You have to find a balance in what you take verses what they produce. The harder you milk them the more they produce and if you aren't milking every day it can cause trouble. As I said, you have to find the right amount to take out. Need to get the udder down enough so you don't get mastitis, but not so much that she over produces the next day and then have mastitis if you don't milk again. We like to start skipping days after a week or two but we had one this year that went longer. |
