Subject: Backgrounding cattle for the feedlot

SW IL
A guy in my neck of the woods used to background 6 to 8 weight feeders for roughly 8 weeks, then ship them off to be custom fed out west. I get with the market being up, anything can be profitable, but, over the long term, is this a profitable enterprise? I would ask him but he passed a way a year or so ago. Just curious if anyone has experience doing this, and/or had some rough numbers on what it might look like purchasing calves to background and then have fed out.
