I am going to be a little on the outs on this subject.

I feed mine the same as the cows with their 11th calf at their side. I am conscious to be sure there is enough room at the bunk so no one is getting pushed out. I believe that extra pampering to get a 1st calver to breed back and wean a calf more than half her body weight is just kicking the can down the road for future problems to show up. Its my system and the cows work for me. I'm not saying to underfeed and stress animals. I'm saying that I expect everything in my system to breed back on the same feed or they are culled. No "extra" feed to keep "hardkeeping" cows in my herd.
