Subject: Corn Silage for fall calvers

We quit silage in 2004 and were spring calving then. I always felt that silage was a waste on spring calvers. Since then I have switched to fall calving and it looks more attractive for them than spring calvers.
I am running some numbers on switching to corn silage for fall calving cows and finishing out calves next year. Right now I am feeding the cows free choice fescue hay supplemented with 6 lbs a day of ground ear corn/distillers and the fat cattle are getting 30 lbs a day of the same feed. How many pounds as-fed of silage a day do I need to figure on feeding the cows and how much corn silage can I use in my finishing ration? How much extra gain would I get on the nursing calves on silage vs hay and grain? I do not have a TMR, all I have is a grinder/mixer. This finishing ration would be topdressing bunks of corn silage with shelled corn/distillers/whatever works.
