i don't know about the gap between $7500 and $3500 bulls but around here the biggest thing guys trip over is just buying a black sale barn bull calf and keeping them intact to breed cows, biggest mistake. Around here the standard across all breeders around here seems like you can get a middle of the pack kind of bull (angus, lim, sim, hereford etc) for around $3500. Even if you only had a dozen cows in the lifetime of that bull that'd be money well spent even if you don't keep heifers.
Agreed.
If you look carefully at his EPDs and physical structure, some of these "middle of the pack" $3500 bulls can do a lot for a herd.
I found out the hard way that even in a small herd, buying a good registered bull from a breeder who you trust and raises bulls the way you will use your bull is well worth the cost.
Just don't be swayed by a fat, sileage-raised bull, often pictured knee deep in straw with bad feet, who will fall apart when you put him out on grass.
