| You should have put a new calf on her to raise this summer. You would lose a lesser amount with the opportunity to break even on her when comparing the numbers to if that calf would have lived. Whats a new calf in your area - $500? Numbers support that especially if you are going to sell & go buy a 1st calf pair to fill up her space in the pasture. She went full term with the calf & still wanted one after it was pulled away. Weird things happen - I wouldn't be so quick to cut ties. Now if the window has passed & you are unable to put a new calf on her I would certainly ship.
Edit to addd: On the retained after birth, I've always been told the calves nursing the cow stimulates the hormones to "release the afterbirth."
