| A lot of considerations. Matching your calving date with your forage resources probably has as much true economic impact as anything else. Went to fall calving because of having irrigated hay meadows to run on. Take one cutting of hay so the regrowth is the best forage of the year, actually better in some ways then the spring where everything wants to shoot a seed head. Generally can find green grass at Christmas (unless it gets snowed under like last winter.) Also have all summer to grow something. Cold dry springs when hay was short was part of the reason some quit cows. | |
