| Kind of having the similar talk with my old man. He wants a fall herd in the worst way. I would rather keep calving the way we are.
We put the bulls out with the older cows so they come in around March 15th, and the first calf hfrs get the bull with them so they come in around middle to end of Feb.
I have enough smaller/ older sheds that i can spread fodder in to get the ones i think are going to come in during the bad spell, shut in and out of the weather.
The hfrs go in a barn with cameras, so I can watch them and see if any are coming in.
My argument is we fight calving during spring field work and planting (usually end up with around 10 bottle calves that i have to deal with until the middle of july), i dont want to deal with calving in the fall while i am trying to do harvest and fall field work.
Old man is upper 60's, I'm 40. We both are stubborn and bull headed. So we have had some pretty lively talks in regards to this....lol | |
