Subject: RE: Stationary vertical mixers

Sioux County, NWIA
I have given the concept of a stationary mixer some thought, for various reasons.

I would not consider driving the mixer with single phase directly. As far as I know the most cost effective way, short of 3 phase service to the yard, would be to use a rotary phase convertor and a 3 phase motor to power the mixer. I would guess you would need well over 100 shaft hp to run a fully filled mixer of the size you are thinking. I would suggest something in the 400s of cubic ft, that would get your hp requirements down but would still give you at least 2 3-4000 lb batches of dense feed and 1 batch of lighter feed. Any mixer can be driven by electric motor with some driveline work. One thing to be aware of with electric motors this large is whether or not the electric company will allow a motor of that size to be started without some kind of soft start to reduce the surge of inrush current.
