Eastern NE KS | The calf had a horrible start but healing from her burns. I was talking with Dad about her. He is gobsmacked. He is 88 yo and never seen a calf like this one in his lifetime. So the following lessons learned may never get used but here goes.
Sunburn was/still is terrible. I never considered her black skin would sunburn so badly. I wish I scooped her to the barn much quicker than I did. I now think spray on sunblock may helped her while in the pasture.
I used a calf blanket because the nights were chilly when she was born. In fact her ears were damaged by 20*f nights.
She had clear eyes at birth but soon they turned cloudy. I thought she went blind. However, this has mostly cleared up. Not sure what caused this issue.
She had grown some hair but it quite thin, like peach fuzz but a little longer.
