Subject: RE: EID mandated tags

Alberta
Been mandated in Canada for almost 25 years, We put them as deep in the ear as i can get them, we rarely loose in the life of the cow. Some cows upwards of 15 years old or more. I would say retention rate if put in properly is in the 99 percent or more range. That said, we do not use bale feeders. I was dead set against them when we were mandated their use, but for anyone who wants to keep records such as weights, pasture groups, sales groups the tags are a valuable resource with scales. My biggest beef is that some consistently do not read with a tag reader. The read percentage when using a tag reader is only about 90 to 95 percent. For anyone who could care less about EID tags, the steel Ketcham metal clip tags are still the only tag that is 99.99 percent never going to pull out if installed properly.
