Yes, I could have started a few days ago. The pastures have just exploded with the recent rainfall. We had 4/10" yesterday morning then another 5/10" last night. I'm in no rush, though. Looking forward to a good first cutting hay crop. I'll be making hay on my hay ground and about any square foot of pasture other than what they're on and a couple weeks ahead. After last summers drought, I don't want to be in the same begging-to-buy-hay situation I was in earlier this year. Yours looks like it has come back nicely after grazing. This time of year I just can't see how you can graze cattle in a (usually) moist climate like ours without having the ability to make hay. Cow consumption is fairly uniform, forage growth is anything but uniform. Seems like you need a way to store excess grass growth at its peak nutrition for times when the grass slows down. |
