We do that. As long as the weather is clear no issues. When a cold snap or snow covers things up we keep free choice hay available in bale rings and enough of them that the calves can get hay as they want
Our stalks are mostly irrigated and have rye flown on Sept 1.
What really shines is when the calves get some size and the rye takes off.
