Subject: RE: Guard Rail Gates

SE Nebraska
When i need a heavier gate than the farm store, i make it out of 2 inch square tubing, 12 gauge wall thickness, 6 bar gate. for hinges I make mine out of 1 inch solid round for the pins and the hinge itself is 1.5" DOM OD tubing so it has a 1/4" wall thickness on the tube. If I make a 16ft or longer gate i size the hinge up to 1.25" or 1.5" pin on a 20ft gate. Grease zerks on all the hinges. Need a heavy duty post setup in the ground to keep the gate from sagging from its weight though! Can get photos of different hinges I have made if interested. Can mount to round pipe or 6x6 posts.

Edit: Havent thought about guard rail before but I would try to use two big pieces of square tubing for the end verticals and then cut the guard rail to the correct length and weld it on both ends between the square tubing. Mount hinge to square tubing. With the wavy structure of the guard rail, it should be stiff enough to not need support in the middle. Would have to trial and error to see for sure tho.
