Subject: RE: Table: By State Crop Conditions

S Illinois
If we are talking about IL, I would be slow to downplay state yield prospects as of today. The N 2/3 of IL has extremely high yield potential currently. While S IL has been a struggle, the northern 2/3 of IL has actually seen normal rainfall in April and May. With a dry winter and spring to handle rainfall stands are good and fertilizer is still there. Planting date may have taken a little hit from extreme max potential, but it’s been a very warm April-May and the corn plants never struggled to get up and growing. Even in S IL there are a lot of areas that have corn up and growing with good yield potential. It’s that last 25% that is the issue. But that 25% of less than 20% of corn acres in IL means we are talking about 5% of IL corn in serious trouble.

Last year all we heard was how dry it was and the daily leaf rolling. But all this rolling was done prior to yield determination. So it looked bad and if a person had to rate the crop it would have looked like worst yield potential but yield wasn’t truly being hurt. Yes I know everyone will say “but what about rows around or ear length.” A 35 k harvest pop with a 16X35 ear and 78k kernel per bu kernel weight is 250 bu corn.

The crops aren’t nearly as sensitive to every little non perfect weather issue as we make them out to be.

Edit:Should have said May was middle of the road when it came to precipitation in the N 2/3 of IL. April was on the wet side.

Edit 2: This is a pretty good weekly source.

Lots and lots of “excellent stands, off and growing, knee high by the 4th of June”. IL maybe not reach the record of 214 for a state average, but IL has very strong corn yield potential right now.
