I did that last year with giant rags, actually mowed it twice before the actual mow to bale pass, got one weedy silage cutting and one decent SS cutting after that, this year that field looks phenomenal.. Used a bushhog and cut it about 5-6 inches high, did clip the top off of some of the alfalfa but did not seem to hurt it.
