Missouri | Of course, and it has been for quite a while now.
CRISPR really shouldn't concern producers though as it's just one piece of the puzzle. We should really be looking into how many moves have already been made in preparation for how tools like these will be implemented. It's only one example, but an umbrella company already owns or has majority control of basic cattle supply companies, a feedstuff and genetic testing lab, a farm management software company, the largest US genetics reproduction company, multiple global bull studs, a complete genomics testing system and database, a majority ownership share of a large well known US cattle herd, and who knows what else by now. All of these companies are established names and are already relied upon by large customer bases in both the dairy and beef industries. They're not start up pipe dreams.
That's a single company with the ability to control everything on the production side from top to bottom with virtually unlimited funding. It's not coming, it's here. They're a contract with an end user away from it being game on. Their level of control will make the Angus association's CAB program look like child's play.
Own land, do chores. The gene they altered doesn't even matter anymore. |
