The other aspect to this is the standard of living has changed as people each generation feel more entitled to bigger and better things. The previous generations around here after a spouse passed a lot of the time grandma or grandpa moved in with the kids/grandkids and lived with them. The houses they lived in with them were also smaller than they currently are being built. We as a country as a whole have developed the mentality that we need to work less, spend more, and are entitled to a better life. Our consumer debt continues to rise as does our national debt. In the old days you bought something when it was needed. Now people spend when something is wanted. Things need to change on a government and personal household scale, but I don't believe either will happen. BTW I'm in my early 30's and fully understand that the since of entitlement is worse in my generation than the previous, and I believe will be worse again the next.
