Subject: Wrapping bales

Driftless SW Wisconsin

The saying is that rain makes grain but rain also makes hay. The problem is that rain also makes it tough to make dry hay.

As a one-man operation with rain about every other day and very high yielding first crop of hay, this is a year for wrapping. At least first crop.

Gathering a lot of bales and moving them to the wrapper seems to be the weak link time wise. The 7610 carrying 2 bales at a time helps. Wrapping has gone well. The remote control on the Anderson wrapper let's me steer the wrapper from the tractor.

These bales are at about 40% moisture and had to sit out overnight but should make good baleage. I usually make the bales about 5' x just under 6' diameter but these are heavy and went 5 x 5. Maybe we can make some dry on the second crop. In any case, very thankful after being so dry and short of hay last year.

While gathering bales I was thinking about the difference in labor these days compared to making this amount of tonnage in the past.
