Subject: Herd bulls or herding bulls ..

Eastern NE KS
We all have herd bulls. Some we fondly remember. Some not so much.

This post is about herding bulls; one that runs around chasing their cows in a preferred direction. And typically being a nuisance during a gather.

I think we are about to experience our 2nd dedicated herding bull. This guy is 16 months old and 2 weeks past virginity. Last evening he was driving his females away from a fence that is on one side of a pie shaped area that narrows to our corrals. The next pasture over holds 11 other bulls. He was certain that his girls would go flirting with the boys two fences over.

In mid 90's, we had our first herding bull. I have mentioned him before as the bull that his back feet stepped 4-6" ahead of his front tracks. He was loose jointed like a cat and would gallop at ease like a good cow horse. I liked that bull but man he could make a fellow swear like a sailor when it was time to leave the cows.

Any good or bad stories about herding bulls to share? Calling for rain tomorrow and I could read up about yours.
