They were employees of a custom manure handler. I don't know any details beyond the reporting, but it would seem to have been hydrogen sulfide (H²S) poisoning.
I've been around liquid dairy manure most of my life. Been under barns bucketing solids out of pits, inside tankers removing debris, welding. Never measured for hydrogen sulfide, never thought even once about it. Just lucky, I guess. I have a kid brother who does the same work on another local crew. I hope the industry takes notice. I can't fathom the trauma that the loss of these two young men is to their communities and families. | |
