It is not better feed than alfalfa, but if you are trying to put weight on some thin cows, if there are oats in the bales, cows will be slick in just a few weeks. Chopping is best for oats. Years ago I had a field of corn get hammers by hail. Cut the yield in half and lots of late season weeds. My Dad was all concerned about the weeds and so was I. We seeded the field to Oats, Alfalfa and Brohm the next spring. Yup lots of big weeds. I told Dad we should chop it if he had room in his silo for it. He didn't think the cows would even eat it. Well we filled his silo and had some we had to bale. He started to feed the oatlage and told me cows weren't interested in it. Next day he started the tractor he fed them with and they all started bawling at him. I guess they figured it out overnight and wanted more.
