For beef cows you are supposed to let it go till it starts changing colors, getting it dry is a challenge, but if you do get it dry cows seem to like it even if it is not perfect, that being said I am always happy when the last bale is gone, I usually feed about 6 bales at a time, 1-2 oats hay and rest hay.
