Subject: RE: How late have you made first cut hay?

For me the latest that I have finished first cutting is October. Back when all we had was a square baler, no accumulator, no trailers, or bale conveyer it took awhile to put up 50,000 square bales a year with a cattle truck with a 12 ft bed and 4 weak minds and stong backs. The quality was low, but as others said it was better than snowballs. The quality actually seemed to go up by the last of July as what you were cutting was the second cut with some standing dead mixed in with it.

For dry cows I would not worry much about getting hay up late. I calve almost all of mine in October. If I can get my hay up by the middle of June I do not have to start supplementing with grain until Valentines day. Last year I did not get done until mud July. I had to start feeding ground ear corn by New Years.
