I used charcoal I made from the brushpile in the pond this year, and a small 'delicates' bag laundry bag from the dollar store got rid of it all on a 1/4-1/2 acre pond. it floats though.

You want it hot so it bakes out as many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or fire up lump charcoal, with very little oxygen and put it out with water to activate it.

If cows eat the char, it doesn't matter. it has been used for centuries as a medicine for acute illnesses in animals. I saw it in the health food section of the store for intestinal tract help.

Up until say the late 1970s, charcoal was used as the filler in potting soil for plants. but it has to be pre-loaded with nutrients or it sucks them out of the soil which would be the same thing it would be doing in your water.

Anyway, just a possibility.
