Cheap labor is key, whether they have the same last name as you or not.

I'm watching some small dairy neighbors struggle to get their stuff done on time. They have 100-200 cows, too much to do alone and too small to hire much help. They work their asses off, but they get feed put up late, then the cows don't milk as well, then they don't have money to pay bills and the cycle continues until the bank says it's time. Hiring manure hauling or chopping done is expensive but it gets things done in a matter of hours and you aren't feeding 1st crop put up "cheaply" and buying protein while your neighbors are on second crop and averaging 40# a cow more. They really are the last of a dying breed.
