Southeast | We are in TN so the grass cycle may be a little different. For a 'normal' fescue/orchard/clover grass hay, it needs to be in the roll by the end of June at the latest to have decent protein and dry matter scores.
The second cuts here are always heavy with Johnson grass, which is great for beef cattle but grows so much faster than the rest of the grasses it makes it hard to get a good yield that the cows will eat. It gets really stalky if it gets too tall and cows will not eat it. Rain permitting, I split load the fertilizer and shoot for a second cut in August or early September. In the wetter years, I get a small 3rd cut instead of clipping the field. | |
