Subject: RE: Changing Dairy Industry

nw NC
The article telling of the planned 25,000 cow operation in South Dakota said that the operation buys corn, corn silage and alfalfa from area growers. It will need nearly one million bushels of dry corn plus silage and alfalfa. Figuring each cow would require a minimum of 10 tons of wet weight silage material each year at a yield per acre of 20 tons would require 12,500 acres which is right at 20 square miles of land. For just silage! A million bushels of grain corn at 175 bu/acre yield would require 5,714 acres , nearly another 9 square miles. Map shows there is about 33 square miles in the township of the county where the operation is planned. Not mentioned, but soybean meal will be needed also, so more acres for that. Imagine the manure that must be disposed of. 22 tanker loads of milk daily going out.
The roads in the area will take a beating.
