Sprinklers apply only the water plants need so less water needs to be pumped. That saves the water in the aquifier. Sprinklers are more efficient. Problem is in total the aquifer is being drained. Going back to flood won't work. It will pull more water from the aquifer. May be drip irrigation is a better answer, but something has to give on the demand side.
