Id say it depends on their age, size, and body condition going into winter.

If you’re still growing the heifer, you’re gonna need more energy than just the alfalfa can provide. Gluten or ddgs can work to keep enough protein to them with some energy to boot.

For the energy aspect just keep an eye on how much corn is in the Pattie’s. Id actually supplement them with gluten for the digestible energy, and maybe 1lb of corn once you’re not seeing as much in the Patties. If they’re on stalks you need the rumen bugs to be tuned for roughage, and too much corn in the diet will change that, or the corn will be underutilized
