We farm a couple hundred acres in the river bottom. Due to the lay of the land, the flood plain is actually fairly narrow right by us, it gets substantially wider a little further south.
At its peak the water was probably ~3000' wide by us. Lots of places that the river flooding was way over a mile wide.
Keep in mind this is just one local, normally small, river I'm talking about. The areas affected by flood water covers a huge chunk of NW Iowa.
