Nw Iowa
In a pretty big area there is approx 10% gone. That would be acres that are gone. One big issue was the heat we had at the beginning of the week, it cooked some corn that normally would have survived. Another issue is usually these acres would get replanted to something but in our area unless we see 5 or 6 days of no rain, no humidity days, nothing will get replanted because we are running out of time. The other that is showing in the corn fields more than the bean fields is the amount of yellow corn around the holes and in areas that water runs off but doesn’t have good drainage. I was out in a system tiled farm today that has a poorer outlet. There is only about 7-8 acres actually drowned out but 30 acres that will not make corn around the drown out spots. This farm probably has highest soil ratings of anything we farm. This is a pretty common problem here. A few farms that are high that have nothing drown out and have some tile look good but very, very few. we have some farms that have what I call good outlets that aren’t working and water just backed up everywhere and these holes that haven’t lost a crop in 20 years are suddenly 20 acres or more gone. One farm that we farm had over a 100 acres under water on a short section. Another 320 probably has 50 acres drown outs, both good producing farms. Another farm that doesn’t hardly have anything drown out as water usually runs across and dries up still has 30 acres of just pure crap of yellow corn that will not make much for yield in those spots without perfect weather going forward. We have just had so much rain that corn has just had very few days without excess rain.
