Northeast Missouri | Yep, completely different worlds. I can move my cows anywhere behind a Kawasaki Mule and a bucket of ground corn. Even if they get out, I can usually get them in that way in very little time--no muss, no fuss, and with no help.
I may have to "ride drag" on little calves...but that's with a Mule and not a horse.
But I have a lot of respect for people who work cattle from horseback. Neighbor bought an 800 lb. wild heifer a couple years ago that could jump or wallow over any fence, and visited a half dozen farms before we caught her...by hiring a *real cowboy* in the neighborhood who roped her running flat out in an open field on my place, with a good horse who also knew what he was doing.
It was quite a show--several neighbors stopped by to watch him catch the heifer. We hog tied her & with enough guys flopped her up into the back of a cattle trailer. Never would have gotten her with out some real cowboy knowhow. | |
