Did the crew know towing it would cause damage?  I would assume they didn't in which case training would be the better option than firing.  I am sure there is more than one farmer who has done this themselves with the same results.  At the least,  employees should be told to call the employer anytime a breakdown occurs before doing anything.  There could be safety issues as well as financial issues that need to be addressed.
