WC Iowa- mostly river bottom | In 1967, my sophomore year in high school, it rained over 20 inches in the month of June alone and there was no crop insurance. 1984 was so wet here on the Missouri river bottom south of Sioux city, Iowa that there was hardly anything planted. Late June or July they had a meeting at the Sioux City air port on what could be done about crop insurance. At that time we only had catastrophic crop insurance that you had to have a 50% loss before you could collect, but you had to have planted to collect. Nobody could plant by the cutoff date. In the mid 1990's, not sure what year, we had 13 inches in 2 days in early July. Couldn't even drive around the country and look at stuff, water over the roads everywhere. Those are the ones that stick out.
I was concerned that the rain in California a couple years ago after a couple years of drought and the 3x normal rain in western Nebraska and South Dakota last year would move this way and sure enough, it did. |
