Subject: Soil N levels at tassel

NE Kansas

Pulled soil samples on some corn fields prior to tassel to see how much N was out there.  15 inch samples. Most fields are around 10-20 lb N/acre.  We are at full tassel, and have been for a week or so.  We've had almost a year's worth (30 inches) of rain since April 18th.  Corn looks outstanding for the most part other than some green snap from a wind storm.  Leaves are green all the way to the bottom.  Only one water logged field really shows issues being uneven, but ironically this field's soil sample came back at 75lb N/acre.  Not sure what that tells me.  Maybe we haven't lost much N, rather the plant has fully utilized what was available.

What should soil  N levels be at this point.  Soils are silt loams to tight clays.  Applied 1.2 lb N/acre as NH3 with Centuro last fall, but expectations are well above what we were shooting for having had so much rain.  If needed, is it too late to fly on foliar N with the fungicide.  They'll be flying any time now.

Thanks
