The rubber rolls that I have seen that are wore bad would have a very noticeable wear spot at each end of the roll (more material coming in right there). Bad ones could have a hand slid through without touching or worse.
I haven't seen a new rubber roll but that would be a good place to look at to see how square the edges are on new ones.
