Holy cow, a lot of logistics involved there. Ben explain a bit more on this please. Community/coop type deal to supply an exporter ? Paying the balers is easy, how do the rakes get paid ?

The exporters make different arrangements with different farmers to buy the hay in the stack, in the windrow, standing, or by the acre for the entire season, depending on where/when/who. How much equipment they provide is just figured into the hay purchase. Obviously if you want full market top dollar price, the farmer needs to get it put up and covered so all the exporter does is arrange transport and processing. If you sell them a cutting standing in the field they’ll bring all the equipment and the purchase price of the hay will obviously be cheaper because of their investment. We’re kind of somewhere in the middle on this deal on this cutting because we cut it all and will do some of the raking, but they’ll do all the baling, stacking, and everything beyond.

It’s probably a bit of a misnomer to call them exporters because the various hay companies also supply domestic and local markets, but everyone knows what you’re talking about.
