Subject: RE: 4020 steering hydrostatic converstion

Faunsdale, AL
Been trying to remember what they’re called……finally looked it up and they’re called an orbital valve. CharLynn/Eaton and probably others have made them for many decades. My 9170 CaseIH 4WD tractor has a big one. Many industrial and farm machines where top speed is not going to be over 25-30 mph will have one.

Probably the hairiest ride I’ve operated was the old UniMat (it was named something like that) flat bed hay hauler we had that was built on F600 truck components. Rear axle welded solidly to frame, front axle was sprung with normal leaf springs with a mount for a steering cylinder welded on axle. Mount actually broke off one time or at least cracked and was breaking off, can’t remember how bad it actually was, just that we had to weld it back. Steering cylinder is controlled by an orbital steering valve like we’re discussing.

The way it was geared it would go 40-ish. Steering always seemed to wander toward centerline when you were meeting oncoming traffic! It had a seat bolted to the left front corner of the flat top so you were perched about 6 feet off the ground behind a low instrument panel/wind break that held up the steering wheel and mounted the two hydraulic control levers. It felt a little “out there” but we hauled a lot of square bales back in the day before the NewHolland stackers. It’s still sitting in the weeds here.
