Your only solution if you want to stay with a conventional machine is to install stub guards. Tightening the reel belt will not help when matted material is speared by the pointed guards. I have been involved with these machines since the early 70s. In the seventies all we sold were conventional guards and had no issues with cutting. By 1980, as hay tonnage increased, we were having problems of plugging at the cutterbar. Installing stub guards solved the problem of cutting with no plugging. This worked for several years, but by the late 80s the machines themselves could no longer handle the heavy crop and disc machines were the only solution.

Stub guards will eliminate the plugging problem. They do require more maintenance in that the clearances between, guard, section and hold down need to be kept at a minimum for a clean cut. Use over-serrated sections for better results. Over-serrated sections self sharpen and remain sharp longer. If you are one to sharpen sections, you are only contributing to your problem.
