I like the idea of trying a scanner and see what happens. Plan "B" would be to check with a local advertising agency or professional photographer to see what photo processing lab they recommend. If you go to an outside lab, you might want to send a few not too important photos first to see if they meet your expectations.

The attached photo was made in 1895 and scanned with my Epson flat-bed scanner in 2012. If you do your own scanning, I suggest using a very high resolution. The results will be a lot better if anyone ever prints photos larger than 5 X 7".

I think it is nice when family members get old photos digitized so they can be shared with others. I hope you can get the negatives processed and the results meet your expectations.
