Central IL
Go to Anchorage on a Saturday morning to visit the open air market and see the University of Alaska's downtown flower displays. Check out the big bears in the Anchorage airport. Do a little salmon and halibut fishing (WARNING!! Catching fresh 10lb silvers while wading will ruin your desire to bass fish locally for a few years). Drive around the Anchorage floatplane airport and parks at dusk (around 11:00 to midnight) and see all the wild moose up close. I think we saw 11 one evening including a few bulls and a couple of calves. We accidently walked up to within 20' of a cow moose at the park. There is a hiking trail up on a hill just west of Anchorage if you are not scared of the bears. The overlook view of Anchorage lights at night is pretty impressive. The Homer spit was an interesting place to visit and we chartered Halibut fishing out of there. Denali was disappointing for us just due to the lack of access. This was 20 years ago so a lot may have changed by now.
