Subject: Highest soybean population

Douglass Kansas

Have a soybean field that was plant on June 27, stand is thin in a lot of areas, small amount has a good stand and a small amount there is not anything. There is places where all of these stands are within 100 feet of each other. Was planted at 149k in 15" rows, field had a rye cover crop on it, so it is difficult to impossible to tell how good the stand is from the tractor cab, if I could tell how thick they are from the cab I would variable rate the replant. Field is poorly drained since it is so flat and has a silty clay, and is unlikely to have problems with drought unless there is very long time without rain.

What I am wondering is how high can the population of soybeans be before there is significant (more than 2 bushel) yield loss from being too thick. Thinking about replant at 140k, at an angle (20 degrees) to the first planting.
