We swath when we see the first few seeds windshelling. Too soon and the stalks will be so wet they will barely dry in swath, too late and you will lose alot to the wind. It's probably different here where we can grow 160bpa+, but straight cutting was a disaster the one time we tried. Oats lodge really easy too if you leave them too long. A bit trickier but my favorite crop
