see quite a few fields of beans turning yellow the past 5 days and not from too much rain even though that is what they look like. Not whole fields yet but definitely the spots are getting bigger.
We have had that for several weeks up around I80 and it is from too much rain. We have not had big rains but they have been consistent and it’s just too wet for beans to nodulate properly. It will affect yields around here.
This is from my Pioneer agronomist.
Yellow soybeans are showing up in slow-to-drain areas of fields.
- Nodulation (plant mechanism of fixing its own nitrogen) is reduced in saturated soils due to a lack of oxygen.
- Soils need to drain to get air into soil to resume N fixation. This will take some time, and lack of N can affect yield.
- Split the nodules with your fingernail and examine. If the inside of the nodule is pink or red, nitrogen is being fixed.
We confirmed N deficiency by tissue sampling 2 fields with green plants and yellow plants (see pic) - nitrogen looks to be the nutrient that varied the most in the yellow soybeans.
