Subject: RE: Question for veteran watermelon growers.

Grandview, TX
We’re the only ones locally growing watermelons. Everyone knows that it’s locally grown and we didn’t pull them unless they have a yellow belly at the bottom and are fully ripe. We had people rave about the sweetness and comparing it to the ones they had as kids from their dads or grandads garden. This was the first year and we only advertised on our towns Facebook page. Word travelled though and we had people coming from farther away. I could see this turning into something as we are only 35 miles south of downtown Fort Worth.

The seedless we grew was fascination and it was about a 20lb melon. From reading and researching this past winter, as the shipping quality of a variety goes up the sweetness is less and vice versa. The ones that go to a grocery store have to have good shipping quality so they will stay good longer. We planted a variety called fascination that didn’t have a great shipping quality but was sweeter and better suited for roadside stands. I knew nothing about melons before and it’s been a learning experience. What varieties do you grow ?
