What you are spraying and contact area will determine rate.  1:8 will get any weed and tree you are spraying the leaves on.  If doing basal spraying big thick rough bark a 1:4-5 mix is better (like mulberry or elms).  Thin bark trees like locust or hedge the light rate is plenty. 

This is based on my guess and by golly method over the years.
