NW Iowa
Here is another redneck make sparks thing you can do. Jump between the big input lug on the solenoid, the one that has the battery cable bolted to it and the big power stud that goes into the starter itself. If the starter turns real nice you probably have enough amperage to crank it and that means the big cable (s) from the battery is carrying a good load. The starter is not going to crank the engine because the solenoid is not activated while doing this but it will tell you the cable is good. You can have 12 volts in a wire but a bad connection can lower the cable’s load carrying capacity down to milliamperes. We got a truck home from Idaho to Iowa once where we could fix the solenoid by doing that trick. The solenoid in this truck would clunk the drive in but it would not send juice to the starter. One man hit the starter button in the cab and I jumped the two big terminals with a wrench. You can’t be squeamish about big sparks and arcing sounds when you do this but it will get you going.
