Could be Florida,Cali, or Mexico as most likely origin. Our H2a workers pick strawberries when they go home to Mexico for the winter.
As to your second question. Strawberry breeders have devoted more attention to taste rather than focusing solely on firmness and shipping ability. Most berries in the store have significantly better flavor than in the past.
Also some of the new varieties set to be released are even better flavor wise. Lots of fruits are doing the same in breeding and research. I’m also finding some of the winter cantaloupe and melons are now pleasantly edible compared to years past.
