Faunsdale, AL | Clutch pedal in kills charge pump on synchrorange tractors not powershift. If you have a powershift with the transmission disconnect lever on the left side of the instrument panel and it’s still operating, by all means throw that. Most of them I see have been disconnected and no longer function as designed.
Agree on lowering 3 point hitch since most of them leak down some and will be lifting as you’re cranking the engine over unless you lower the lever. On old tractors there will be some leaks in hydraulic system that will load the front pump while cranking. Destroking the front pump is ideal, but turning steering back and forth while cranking is a time honored effective way to cut cranking effort on old JD tractors!
Two 12 volt batteries in the old battery boxes will sometimes go better because you can have some small problem with one or its connections and the other one will maintain cranking voltage and you will get started. Long term you’ll probably replace more batteries because two in parallel are the perfect setup for one to fail and kill the other one. I always try to replace them in pairs to avoid this but that means even if you caught it before the bad one ruined the other one, you still get to buy two new batteries!
If you want to do it, a single group 31 in a box close to the starter will do more than the two long skinny batteries ever did. New/shorter cables and a little more cranking capacity than the combination of either the two 6’s or two 12’s in the battery boxes. Battery will be cheaper too. Also a great time to add a battery disconnect.
I spent way too much time building a battery box and cover for my 4320 but I was pleased with it when I got done.
The slickest ones I’ve seen are when the single battery box is mounted in the aftermarket steps with a handrail that are popular these days. It should be an option on those things.
